When Climate Change Stakeholders and Bloggers Come Together, Great Things Happen

When Climate Change Stakeholders and Bloggers Come Together, Great Things Happen

When Climate Change Stakeholders and Bloggers Come Together, Great Things Happen. The just concluded Bloggers sensitization workshop just gave me hope in our ministry of Enviroment and Forestry once again.

A few years ago, immediately after graduating and getting my bachelors degree in Wildlife Management. Just like any graduate, I started looking for a job and my first stop was at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in one of the county government.

Very prepared and confident that I will get a chance to apply what I had learned in class. I was ready for either a job or an internship, but not what I encountered that day.

As you all know how hard it is to have a sitting with the big guys in the government office. So getting an appointment with him was after a few weeks of constant calls and visits to his office. So he had no choice but allow me a few minutes of his time.

I requested him to let me know some of the projects he was currently having for the benefit of our environment and forest. And the answer almost made me lose my cool. He shamelessly told me that, he was currently helping in digging dams for the community. So as to allow them access to water.

That was not a bad idea, but isn’t that supposed to be done by guys from the ministry of water? So innocently made my question clearer, and inquired if he had any projects that directly profited environment or forest management/cover. And there was none.

I had just got my final paper at the university published and it was promoting the planting of indigenous species. As well as highlighting the negative effects of exotic species. It was one of the ideas that I was to share with him but he was not in a position to welcome the idea. So sadly, I went back home and lost faith in this ministry.

Then Blogging Happened

I tried other environmental fields to get a job, but none came through. Since I had to take care of myself and lessen my parent’s burden, I decided to take any job that crossed my path.

My passion for the environment still stayed with me and that’s how I ended up blogging. I realized I could still educate others through this channel.

And blogging through BAKE (Blogger Association of Kenya) helped me get this amazing opportunity to interact with incredible climate change stakeholders.

Ways My Pets have been awesome to me

Ways My Pets have been awesome to me

Yes, there are various ways my pets have been awesome to me. They have been literally my life guardian angel ever since I was a small kid.

Being the shortest, shy and fat kid, you become the easiest target for bullies. They will also pick on you, as they make your life at school miserable and kinda a hell on earth.

I was quite bullied at school and due to my introvert nature. I rarely shared with anyone , except my pets. My bullies upgraded their technique each passing day and they seem to enjoy this hellish ride.

Back at home, it was different. My parents tried their best to create us a paradise. They offered what they could and help us understand why they were unable to provide some of things we may have requested. They encouraged open communication but there was a little problem.

They both worked in our shop which happened to be the same place where we lived. So they work up ver early to open the shop, and closing time was pretty late. So if you needed to tell them something or have a talk with them about anything. It would have to happen at the shop. So somehow, it was not an easy place to go and tell mama about the bullying stuff there.

I feared the customers hearing of my problems and the interruptions as they come to buy stuff. So as much as mum encouraged us to tell her anything bothering our little souls. Her schedule was pretty occupied.

And this where my pets came in handy. Luckily dad introduced me to pets very early . My first pets were a cat and two squarrels. They were my world and everyone in the house respected their existence . Even if they did like the company as I did.

My pets listened to me

Conservation is a Serious Affair

Conservation is a Serious Affair.

Conservation is a Serious Affair. This includes conservation education and awareness. Let’s stop taking them for granted or as jokes.

Misconceptions contributing to conservation woes hence ignored as a serious affair:

  • Why should I care for nature an wildlife, yet we have organisations or governments tasked to do exactly that?

Some people think that conserving our environment is a responsibility for a particular group of people. They don’t see any importance of their participation.

These are people who will litter the streets comfortably knowing that some worker some where is being paid to collect such trash.

They will will leave a lost or injured animals helpless on the road , because to them, that’s not their business.

Such people will not even bother to have flowers or pets. They see such as waste of time and disturbance. And in the long run, they miss what nature can offer them if they were to change their thinking.

I tend to think that all public resources belong to the public. Hence by default, it’s our duty to ensure they are in good condition. That effective laws are passed to protect them and their management by the set organisations is carried out well.

We are supposed to know and ensure that the natural resources are not abused or mishandled by anyone.

As much as we may have different bodies tasked to ensure our environment and species are okay. We have to be actively involved.

  • What do I gain from conserving or spreading conservation education and awareness?

Twisted Conservation Education and Awareness

Twisted Conservation Education and Awareness.

Why are we confusing the local communities and other kind hearted people from all corners of this amazing planet?

Conservation is being turned into a jackpot for mining money. And people are applying all cruel means they can think of. Wildlife and innocent people are being lied to, their resources stolen, and many other awful things.

How did we get there?

Few years ago, not many knew or understood much about conservation. Most wildlife were abundance and safe from danger. It was not of necessity.

Then we started to over-use the natural resources. We took more than the nature could regenerate. And in the process, started to loss some of these resources for good. They disappeared forever and in return gave reason torecheck how we used these resources. Giving birth to conservation.

Conservation was not well received and still not yet close to most people’s heart. Since it meant reduced resources harvesting and that meant reduced dollars. No one likes that, everyone love making more and not less.

Embracing of conservation as well as its education and awareness spreading

Genuine conservationists used everything they had to ensure it survived all the opposition. They ensure to reach the most affected places and helped the locals understand importance of protecting natural resources surrounding them. In the process, the rest saw and appreciated their efforts. Hence conservation gained some good roots to withstand opposition from those against it.

Conservationist either do it as individuals, groups or even organizations. The aim being to consolidate their efforts and fight whatever that was derailing conservation success. After all, more than one head is better while solving problems. But something started to go south ways.

So what is this twisted conservation education an awareness am talking about?

Do you donate to wildlife fund organizations? Or support conservationists/local communities? Or any activities that is meant to support wildlife welfare.

I guess most of us do so or something close to that. And we do so because we love wildlife and wish to have them longer. For the future generations and ensuring that our planet don’t loss these treasure. We all give and contribute what we have for the love of wildlife.

And that’s how twisted conservation found it ways into our already destroyed and vulnerable planet.

Sadly, a group of evil people have realized how to use wildlife for their benefits. They are ripping off these donations and funds for their own benefits. And some going to an extent of harming wildlife they are supposedly expected to protect. Or misusing local communities resources.

Most of the time, the local don’t know much about conservation of the wildlife surrounding them. And some already have a cold shoulder towards them due to human-wildlife conflicts. So when we manage to convince them to join conservation ride, it’s a milestone. So what happens when they are convinced by the “fake and evil” conservationists?

These evil people have disgraced true conservation and justice for wildlife. Conservation is already a hard and yet to be embraced in most corners. Twisted conservation seem to be penetrating pretty fast.

Currently in Kenya, there’s an organisation being accused of stealing elephants valves from their mothers. So that they can pretend to have saved them as orphans.

It all started here.

Here are the links to some cries from several conservationists about this recovery.

Conservation Education and Awareness

Should conservation education and awareness be included in the syllabus? Personally, I think it should be included. I remember doing a  short survey on the same. It was a survey carried out by an environment organization. Am yet to know what transpired after we gave our thoughts.

At what point were you exposed to the conservation education? How was it done? Did you get an opportunity to understand its importance. Or was done just as a by the way.

As much I grew up loving nature and animals to be specific. It was a passion nurtured by the animals I was exposed to. My dad loves animals and he did much of my introduction to this animal world. I always accompanied him. My free time was dedicated to animals.

I guess this contributed to my few friends while growing up. I always find comfort spending time with animals. I still do. They have an effect on my moods and motivation. I could be having a terrible day but a five minutes with animals, fixed everything. At least that’s how I feel.

It was in high school that I really got an exposure to wildlife and nature. This was through Wildlife Club that I was lucky to chair for two years. We didn’t have much activities as I wanted. We mainly planted trees and kept rabbits at some point. Materials were limited and this was a major limitation.

Most of the students joined the club for wrong reasons. They thought it was a ticket to filed trips. Hence the meaning of the club was never fully enjoyed. Our club matron did her best to give us the best. But I hope we could have done much.

Importance of conservation education and awareness

  1. It will help shape the young generation to the right direction in issues regarding nature.
