What Happens To the Wildlife and other Species when Hit By Drought?

What Happens To the Wildlife and other Species when Hit By Drought?

What Happens To the Wildlife and other Species when Hit By Drought? Does it cross our mind when helping humans struck by drought? Do we include them in plans made to help out those being affected by this dangerous calamity?

Climate change and global warming have given birth to severe calamities such as droughts. Which has greatly hit parts of the world, especially Africa. People and other living organisms die as result of lack of food and water. They starve to death. I can only imagine the pain that goes along with it.

Have you ever missed a meal or drink for several hours, due to unavoidable circumstances? Maybe your hiking takes longer than you anticipated and no shop to do a refill? Every cell in your body cries out loud and pain can be unbearable.

At least in this scenario, you have hope that someone in the next day of couple of hours. You will get something to eat and drink. But that’s not the case when a drought hits you. As much you may have hope that someone may come in your rescue. The hope is pretty slim.

When drought hit wildlife

Wildlife in areas hit by drought suffer a lot and put themselves in trouble with the community.

They will be forced by the circumstances to move into the communities’ space. Leading to increased human-wildlife conflicts. In the process losing their lives or getting hurt really bad.

They are also targeted as food source in such times.

Most of the water sources in the conservation areas and areas occupied by wildlife depend on the natural sources. Like rains, rivers, among others. Unlike us, they don’t have tapped water directed to the natural homes.

So the rains and rivers continue to vanish in our planet. Water sources disappear in wildlife areas. Wildlife ends up traveling long distances and invaing communities’ space in search of water.

With no rains and dried rivers, the soils will be equally dry. So vegetation dries up shortly aftrewards.

On top of, poaching and diseases, natural calamities contribute to massive wildlife wipe out.

Should we relocate wildlife in affected areas?

That may be seen as an option, but it would be a bad one.

This is because this will cause pressure on the available resources in that particular area. Thus creating more problems to the other wildlife.

So what should we do about it?

We Kill Wildlife while protecting Livestock, But feed captive Wildlife with Livestock

We Kill Wildlife while protecting Livestock, But feed captive Wildlife with Livestock

We Kill Wildlife while protecting Livestock, But feed captive Wildlife with Livestock. It’s sadly funny, right? And somehow doesn’t make sense.

Livestock

It refers to domesticated animals that have raised in an agricultural setting to produce labor and commodities such as meat, eggs, milk, fur, leather, and wool.

They are animals that early humans managed to change their way of living and extracted them from their natural habitat.

Unfortunately, just like slavery. It was an aggressive invitation into the humans’ settlement. This is because they had and could do something of help to human species. How do you treat domestic animals around you?

Livestock had to undergo various changes and developments so as to meet humans needs. Whereby their bodies have been injected with drugs, fed food to boost whatever seemed to be missing, and even forced to grow faster through science.

They completely have no leisure to live their own lives as they please. But what seems more profitable to humans. For example, a chicken that would take a year to mature and hatch their own chicks. They now take months, if not weeks, to mature and make way to our plates. The eggs no longer need their mama’s warming them up for 21 days. Incubators took over.

Poor livestock, living by our terms and seem not to have way to defend themselves.

Livestock activists

Am happy to see a part of humans fighting for livestock that is being placed under uncondusive environment.

They are able to ensure that no livestock is killed ruthlessly. They are transported in such a way that doesn’t cause pain to the transportedlivestock. The ones being used for labor provision are not overworked.

Just to name a few. They are there to ensure that we respect and treat livestock in a good way.

Why do we kill wildlife while protecting livestock, but feed captive wildlife with livestock?

Celebrating Queen of Elephants (Kenya)

Celebrating Queen of Elephants (Kenya)

Celebrating Queen of Elephants (Kenya). An elephant that touched the lives of many through her incredible tusks. That were long enough to touch the ground while she walked.

Queen of Elephants

She passed away sometime back as a result of natural causes. Which is believed to have been contributed by her old age and drought currently being experienced where she lived. This dry season has really caused suffering to both the very young and old wildlife.

Her death found her in Tsavo, where she had managed to live for over sixty years.

She managed to escape premature death like some of her type. Which is resulted by poisoned arrows, snare and bullets. She survived all that and able to live her life to the old age. This is very rare, especially for elephants like her. That have that size of tusks.

We can say, it has been due to the combined efforts of various organizations and Kenya Wildlife Services. In protecting this species. As poachers continue to poach them for their ivory.

According to the lucky photographer, who managed to take her last photos. She was a calm elephant that even allow him to be too close to her.

What do we learn from Queen of elephants?

Her fame was attached to her incredible beautiful tusks. Most of us only managed to have a glimpse of her though her photos going round in the social media. Photos that have melted our hearts and allowed a chance to enjoy them on her.

It is evident that those tusks only looked well on her and not on how the ”bad” do with such. We were also happy that she managed to life her life to the fullest without having to suffer a premature death.

Animals that need no passport for their travels : Birds

Animals that need no passport for their travels : Birds

Birds are animals that need no passport for their travels around the world. They just need enough strength and natural sources of direction/light to get to their destinations.

Birds

They belong to the kingdom, Animalia. Incuding all living organims that are not plants.

They come in different shapes and sizes, as well as colours.

I remember a song one of my business tutors taught us, and I can say it described the lives of birds. The song lyrics were; Early to bed, early to rise. Makes someone healthy, wealthy and wise.

Birds go to sleep early and wake us up very early. I must also add that , we can classify them as morning people. They will wake up very early and always with a song to start off their day.

Not caring what happened the previous day or that particular day problem. They have the best way of starting their days.

Unlike the other wildlife spoting, bird watching is a little bit different. But very interesting when you finally get your way around it.

Things that amaze me about birds

They have freedom of movement around the world. They travel across oceans, move from one continent to another, and enjoy freedom.

Before all the developments came along, I think birds were among the luckiest animals with huge freedom. They could be able to change locations when things got messy or unbearable.

They are also very intelligent. Understand that their journeys need energy . So they eat to a point of doubling their usual weight and use that energy for flying long distance.

What about their sense of fashion, they are the most beautiful and colorful animals on our planet.

African Hoopoe is my best birds, but hummingbird always amazes me. Let us explore more about them in our next blog post.

Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are among the smallest migrating birds on our planet . A bird whose brains make up 4.2% of its body weight.

Hummingbirds

Their name was derived from the humming sound generated by the tiny wings when they fly. They are native to America’s and one of the smallest birds alive.

They are about 357 species of hummingbirds.

Males are smaller than the females in the small bodied species, while in large bodied species. The males are larger than the females.

They have no sense of taste but they can see colors. Mostly attracted to bright colors like red. Infact, they can see in UV light hence further than humans can. They also have a better sense of hearing.

They are nectarivores, meaning that they depend on nectar for their food.

By feeding on the nector, they are able to promote pollination in the flowers they get nector from.

After insects, hummingbird have the highest metabolism while in flight. This helps us understand how a migrating ruby-throated hummingbird is able to cross the Gulf of Mexico.

Outdoor activities of great help

Outdoor activities of great help. Activities that make use of evry part of you from brains, muscles and even soul.

Such activities are very important for our wholesomeness. Allows us to enrich every ascept of our being. Hence keeping away doctors and poor health. And mostly at a very low cost. Yet benefits are so many.

These outdoor activities includes:

Rock climbing

Rock climbing can be categorized into various groups depending on their difficulties levels.

Some may be easy for all groups with or without experience. But the participants have to have no phobia for heights.

As you climbing these rocks, you will get to use all your limbs. That is, both your hands and legs. For moments. Mostly it will involve tips of your toes and fingers. Which we rarely subject to such pressure in our normal lives.

We get to understand strength of some of our body parts that we may have taken for granted.

You are also forced to trust the rope tied around your waist incase of any trebbling or incidences. Trusting that incase all goes wrong you can always hang in the air as you wait for help to come. The rope also helps you balance your weight, on your way down. Preventing you crushing to your death.

We Need To Talk

We Need To Talk

We Need To Talk. The most fear sentence of line by human kind.

I looked at him and wondered, “Why are so sad?”and what’s the need of the talk?”
He just shook his head and looked the other side.

Had I done something wrong?

I needed to know, so I went ahead and planted my face to his.
He took a deep breath and requested me to sit with him.

“Have you ever though how things would be running here, if human species was never part of it?”

That was not what I was hoping for, so I just stared at him.

“More species are getting extinct each passing day. The climate and weather patterns are no longer predictable. Infact they are becoming unbearable.

The temperatures in the oceans are rising and poles are rapidly melting away. Oxygen is becoming a critical need in the ocean’s floor. How are those species supposed to survive without oxygen.

It’s funny how you joke of how in near future, ice cone will be melting in your hands before you even get a chance to lick it few times. The heat is already here, and as always. It has not yet shock you enough. Can you know enjoy your ice cream in the open around midday?

In Support of, ”This is Ground Zero. Support the Future”

In Support of, ”This is Ground Zero. Support the Future”

In Support of, ”This is Ground Zero. Support the Future”. This has been done in different cities through protests by school kids. With one message, for political leaders to pay attention and stop politizing everything.

Greta Thunberg is a sweet girl aged 16 years. Very passionate climate activist that have been protesting for change among the political leaders. She has touched and convinced many despite her young change. Clear indicator that anyone can cause change, and age remains just a number.

It’s true many may ignore children’s advise as they are seen not mature enough. Or assumed that don’t know much. But she proved us wrong. She was able to see the ugly side of humans.

Whereby the poor suffer for the few rich people to have a better live. Where we get to suffer consequences of others and still say nothing. Or made to remain silence / lied to when we decide to speak up.

Are parents paying attention?
