Are we doing enough for our aging folks and loved ones?

All the basic life skills were taught to us by our parents and guardians,
They taught us what we needed to know while growing up,
From cleaning our noses to using the toilets,
They are our reference and directors for a good life,
They were our first teachers that ofered life education for free.

As we grow up many tend to think that their parents are old and know not much,
Yet when we were kids, they were our "google",
We only believed them to know everything in life,
Whatever you needed to confirm,
Mum and dad were the experts to approach.

Then came the technology,
The machines that we could code and it does all sort of stuff for us,
They consumed us turning us to walking machines,
Stripping away most of our humanity,
We placed all our trust and hopes on them.

The old folks come to visit once in a while,
Since they may not be able to comprehend all the crazy machines,
They may ask a question or two,
End up messing a thing or two as they learn,
Their grandchildren laugh with them for all the fun mess.

They taught us almost everything we know in our lives,
The important basics was given to us freely,
Do we do the same right now?
When was the last time you took your mum through some processes in the internet,
Am not talking about the likes of face time, Facebook and all the social media stuff,
The real deal that has made our lives easier through the innovations.

Do they have the latest electronic like you do ?
We are keen on upgrading our devices as invocations continue progressing,
They ensured to give us all they could manage,
Placing our happiness as the number one priority,
Are we doing the same?

Am not saying we go around buying them fancy devices,
They are things that they had to forgo as they took care of us,
Things they loved to do to pass time but couldn't enjoy anymore,
All the stuff they have to pass and concentrate on us,
You were their first priority, make them yours now.

A weekend with them without our complicated ever busy devices on sight,
Just us and them , quality time,
Baking random recipes, enjoying funny comics, revisiting the golden memories,
Just giving ourselves 100% to them once in a while,
It will mean a lot to them.

Take some time off,
Leave all your phones and computers back at home,
Go see your aging folks,
Spend some time with them,
Help them enjoy what they had to give up for you,
Thank me later.

  1. Who knew where does his destiny is leading him? Accepting that he can’t change the past is the only motivation he has to keep moving forward. After all these years of happiness and disappointments, he has one thing constant. One thing that he always tried to change but it remains intact and that only thing is the ‘way he feels for her’. Loving her hurts him a lot but everything he can do is keep moving.

  2. Parents moved in with me 2002 and mother passed in 2012. Father is 94 and can take care of his basic functions. I must run the finances, household, driving and cooking but he helps out. I was glad to be retired and able but a huge crisis in USA is the enormous cost of elder care facilities. Even for less expensive facilities , just several months in a facility would take a year’s pay for most people. I can’t imagine how people can care for parents needing advanced elder care and keep them home. It is a national nightmare in USA and few will enter into public discussion.
