How Far Is Too Far

Everyone loves good times and these good times contain light moments, the jokes.
We get to joke about some things on each other especially the ones considered as weaknesses in the serious world.
This include our weight, height, jobs, wealth, physical nature, among others.
While cracking those jokes and laughing off our lungs, do we really get to notice how far we go?
As human we are always giving remarks whether they are hurtful or not. That’s why we all fought for the freedom of expression and opinion. But the same right is making us kill each other slowly.
Some remarks may be unintentional but they still hurt đŸ€•. As much as we may have made those remarks as a joke they do touch a nerve.
Have you ever been keen and survey a friend whom the jokes are bring made of? They may laugh off together with rest but those words do come back to their thoughts once they are alone.
So how far is too far?
How do you tell that you are crossing the line?
When do you stop?

They was this incidence that made me sad and prompted me to write this. The people I was with were making jokes on how stammers talk and unfortunately one of us happened to be a stammer. To make it worst, they could call him out by his name while imitating the stammering. He laughed at first but as the jokes went on and on, he was slowly pulling away. He no longer laughed but instead stared at the rest of the people laughing. No one seemed to notice the change hence continued making fun of his disability. So I texted him we go out and get some air, luckily he agreed to it. While we were gazing at stars and exploring the rooftop, we started chatting about how the stars and night lights seemed so beautiful for shots. Then he asked me a question, how comes we all make jokes on people’s weaknesses and think its okay? He sounded really concerned and I tried to explain what I personally thought about it.
So as much as he was laughing with us, we had crossed a line.
Next time you are about to make a joke, evaluate its effect on the concerned person’s feelings.

Let’s be our brother’s keeps.

  1. It is really appalling, insensitive and downright cruel how some people make fun of another person’s weakness that he has no control over and then expect that same person to participate and laugh along with them. Its not a question of how far is too far but rather these put downs should not have started in the first place. Avoid such toxic people!
